In 2002, I needed a tool for online surveys for my own research. There was nothing you could reasonably work with. So I started building one myself, at the University of Hannover.
In 2004, it became eQuestionnaire — and with it, a company. Not because that was the plan, but because other researchers and market researchers kept asking whether they could use it too.
During my doctorate at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar under Prof. Thorsten Hennig-Thurau, then six years as a lecturer there — business administration, marketing, media research — and later during my years as a professor at the University of Siegen, the tool grew with every study. At both universities I taught courses in multivariate analysis and data analysis; along the way, I trained more than 16,000 students in empirical methods. Much of what that work demanded is in the tool today.
Alongside this, I’ve been the technical operator of the research rankings JOURQUAL and VHB-PMR (German Academic Association of Business Research) for years — survey infrastructure on a national scale for German management science. Many lessons from that work flow directly into QUESTIONSTAR.
In 2019, we rebuilt eQuestionnaire technologically from the ground up and carried it on as QUESTIONSTAR — with the goal of bringing many years of experience onto a stable, modern foundation.
Since then, we’ve kept developing the tool along what’s actually needed in practice.
If something is missing and it makes sense, we build it.That’s how Excel export came about.Multilingual surveys too.Saving answers immediately instead of only at the end — same story.SPSS export, anonymity settings — built step by step.
Today the tool is used in many different contexts — in research, in companies, in the field. It’s meant to simply work. Even when things get complicated.
Of course we make money with this. A tool that helps people in their daily work gets paid for — otherwise it wouldn’t exist for long.
What’s in it for you:a tool that doesn’t hold you up.And a provider that won’t be gone tomorrow.
We are self-funded and decide for ourselves what we do — without investor pressure, without chasing margins. That’s how we’ve worked for over twenty years.
If you like, try it out.If something is missing, write to us.
