Edit a Question

Editing Question Text and Options

As soon as you've created a new question, a kind of template appears — matching the question type you chose. It forms the starting point for editing the question further. Here you can:

  1. Edit question text or prompt:
    Enter your actual question and/or an explanatory instruction for respondents here. The text can be formatted and, if needed, enriched with media.

  2. Edit options:
    Label the answer options here. When the question is created, three options are inserted automatically. Options you don't need can be deleted. New options can be added at any time. Using the handle in front of each option, you can drag and drop it to rearrange the options as needed.


    Tip: Use the Productivity Tips — for example Tab and Shift+Tab to move quickly between options, Ctrl+Enter (Cmd+Enter) to insert a new option, or Ctrl+Shift+V (Cmd+Shift+V) to paste several options at once — for instance from Word or Excel.

  3. Add a new option:
    Clicking "Add Option" at the end of the list adds another answer option.

  4. Text formatting:
    A wide range of formatting options is available for the currently selected text — whether in the question text or in an option (e.g. bold, italic, colors, indents).


    Note: The general formatting of fonts, colors, and sizes is set centrally in the "Style" view. So use the formatting functions within a question sparingly — for emphasis such as bold, italic, or a few individually colored words, for example. This way you avoid conflicts between local text formatting and the global survey layout.

  5. Clear formatting:
    Removes all formatting in the selected text area.
  6. Keep formatting on paste:
    By default, when you paste formatted text (e.g. from Word or web pages), the original formatting is removed. This option lets you keep it.
  7. Insert content:
    Insert additional content such as links, images, emojis, tables, or embedded media elements (e.g. audio or video via embed code).
  8. Move question:
    Moves the current question up or down within the page.
  9. Insert new question:
    Creates a new question directly above the current one.
  10. Preview:
    Opens the Preview of the question so you can test how it looks from the respondent's perspective.
  11. Open settings:
    Opens the question's settings panel — there you can define advanced settings for the question's layout and behavior. You'll find more information in the respective articles on the individual question types.

Helper Menu for Options

When you enter the text of an option or click into the corresponding field, a helper menu with various actions appears above the current option:

  1. "+":
    Inserts a new option directly below the current one.
  2. Add custom text field:
    Adds an extra free-text field to the option or removes it again — ideal for options like "Other".
  3. Pin icon (pin item):
    If Randomized options is enabled in the question settings, the current option can be pinned with a single click. It then stays in its position — for example at the end of the list. Useful for fixed options like "Other".
  4. Magic wand:
    Gives you access to numerous common scales — e.g. agreement, importance, frequency. Saves time when creating typical scales. More on this: Productivity Tips
  5. Gear icon:
    Opens additional settings for the answer option. These options depend on the question type you chose and are explained in the respective question-type articles.
  6. Trash icon:
    Deletes the current option from the list.
