When evasys fits

evasys has been used for course evaluation at many universities for decades. In several situations, evasys is the better choice:

  • When paper forms are part of it. evasys processes online, paper and hybrid surveys; paper forms are scanned, including handwriting recognition. In the hybrid method, a used TAN excludes the paper form from the analysis and vice versa. QUESTIONSTAR offers no paper forms and no scanning.
  • When course evaluation runs centrally for the whole university. Courses arrive via CSV, XML or from the student information system, and reports go automatically to teaching staff and deans' offices.
  • When learning platforms should be connected directly. evasys offers LTI for Moodle, Canvas, Blackboard, Brightspace and ILIAS as well as connections to Stud.IP and CAMPUSonline.
  • When evaluation, exams and quality management should come from a single source. With evaexam and qurricula, the vendor also covers exams and accreditation.
  • When you are looking to exchange ideas with other universities. Training sessions, a community and the annual evasys conference connect many evaluation offices.

Use QUESTIONSTAR when...

Some universities run evasys for central course evaluation and a second tool for ad-hoc surveys. QUESTIONSTAR can be both: the main tool for digital course evaluation, or the complement for research and live voting.

  • ...when courses should be evaluated fully digitally. QUESTIONSTAR: templates for evaluating lectures and tutorials, a QR code for the lecture hall, individual survey links and access codes per participant so each person takes part only once. One questionnaire can cover many courses or teaching staff; you create the report per course or per instructor using filters.
  • ...when you want to vote during the lecture and show the result immediately. QUESTIONSTAR is suited to live voting during the lecture; answers appear in real time. evasys also analyzes in real time in the browser; live voting with result display in the lecture hall is not publicly documented.
  • ...when research surveys should also run in the same tool. QUESTIONSTAR: branching with multiple conditions, quotas, block randomization, loops and piping, plus crosstabs, group comparisons, t-tests and other significance tests, as well as SPSS export with labels. evasys offers filters, plausibility checks and SPSS and CSV export; significance tests are not publicly documented.
  • ...when teaching staff and deans' offices want to reuse the report directly in Word or PowerPoint. QUESTIONSTAR creates analysis reports as editable Word, PowerPoint and Excel files, plus PDF. evasys base reports show mean, median, standard deviation and profile line as HTML or PDF; the export formats of the insights module are not documented in detail.
  • ...when you start with a single department or faculty without a central process. QUESTIONSTAR: public academic plans from STUDENT at €29/month, all with every survey feature. evasys creates individual quotes.
  • ...when international students should answer in their own language. QUESTIONSTAR: automatic translation into 106 languages, unlimited language versions. evasys offers multilingual questionnaires; automatic translation is not publicly documented.

Migrate questionnaires: AI via MCP

If your evasys questionnaires exist as PDFs, for example as paper templates, they can be migrated with AI; evasys exports raw data as SPSS or CSV. QUESTIONSTAR does not offer a dedicated evasys importer; the AI-based MCP path handles the reconstruction.

Path: AI migration via MCP

  1. Provide the questionnaire as a PDF.
  2. Hand the file to an AI agent (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and others) with the QUESTIONSTAR MCP server.
  3. The AI reconstructs question texts, scales and pages in QUESTIONSTAR; you add filters, a loop for multiple courses and language versions during review.

Limit of reconstruction: What gets migrated is what is visible in the questionnaire. Course imports, report distribution, TAN procedures and connections to learning platforms are not carried over; which workflows can be mapped with QUESTIONSTAR, the API or webhooks is something you should check separately.

The time required depends on complexity. For larger inventories we offer a guided migration service.

If you are switching your digital course evaluation, a clear cut-off date is recommended: you finish the current evaluation in evasys, and the new semester starts in QUESTIONSTAR. You export previous results as CSV and, if needed, migrate them via the MCP path.

For departments, faculties and universities

QUESTIONSTAR covers surveys from a single department up to an entire university, with all survey features already in the Free plan.

  • Alongside evasys: Where evasys handles the central course evaluation, QUESTIONSTAR complements it: research surveys, individual lecturers' own evaluations, live polls and administrative surveys.
  • Academic plans: STUDENT €29/month, RESEARCHER €295/year, CHAIR €895/year, CAMPUS on request. Details on the pricing page.
  • University SSO: eduGAIN and national federations (InCommon, UKfed, SWITCHaai; DFN-AAI as the German example) for user accounts from CHAIR on request, included in CAMPUS. More on university SSO.
  • GDPR: DPA available for direct download, sub-processor list public, hosting with IONOS in Germany (EU); on-premise in the CUSTOM plan.
  • Support: by email and phone for all customers, regardless of plan.

What evasys does better is stated above under "When evasys is the right fit": paper and scanning, central processes with campus management and learning platforms, exams and quality management from a single source.

Discuss your university setup

Your data stays your data

If at some point QUESTIONSTAR no longer convinces you, you get all your data out in full: as SPSS, CSV or Excel. Anytime, without cancellation, without extra charge, without having to ask. We treat data export as a baseline, not a bargaining chip.

Who is QUESTIONSTAR a good fit for as an alternative or complement to evasys?

For lecturers with their own evaluation

If you want to evaluate your course additionally or in between, for example at mid-semester: QUESTIONSTAR with a template, a QR code in the lecture hall and results in real time. Limit: for the mandatory central evaluation, your university's procedure applies.

Templates for course evaluation

For evaluation offices without paper forms

When course evaluation runs entirely digitally: one questionnaire for many courses, access codes per participant, reports per course via filters and editable Office reports. Limit: if paper forms, scanning or automatic report distribution from the campus management system are needed, evasys is built for that.

Templates for course evaluation

Frequently asked questions about evasys and QUESTIONSTAR

Can QUESTIONSTAR replace evasys?

QUESTIONSTAR can cover digital course evaluations: with templates, access codes per participant, one questionnaire for many courses and reports per course. Whether it replaces evasys as a central tool depends on course management, integrations, access rights and automatic report distribution. For research, individual evaluations and live polls it can complement evasys.

How does an online course evaluation work with QUESTIONSTAR?

You start with a template for a lecture or seminar. One block of questions repeats via a loop for each course or instructor. Students receive individual links or access codes; each code is valid for one response. You create the report per course via filters and export it as PDF, Word, PowerPoint or Excel.

Does participation via QR code work in the lecture hall?

Yes. The QR code is generated automatically; students take part directly on their smartphones while they are still sitting in the lecture hall.

Are there paper forms?

No. QUESTIONSTAR collects online, on mobile and via QR code. If paper forms are needed, evasys is the right solution.

Can I show results live during the lecture?

Yes. Answers appear immediately in the dashboard; for polls during the lecture you show the results directly in the lecture hall.

Where is the data stored?

QUESTIONSTAR hosts with IONOS in Germany (EU), ISO 27001 certified data centers, and on-premise is possible in the CUSTOM plan. evasys offers hosting by the provider or on the institution's own server, with GDPR compliance and ISO 27001 (certified April 2024). Both offer a DPA.

Is there university SSO?

Yes. eduGAIN and national federations (InCommon, UKfed, SWITCHaai; DFN-AAI as the German example) for user accounts from CHAIR on request, included in CAMPUS.

When does evasys remain the better choice?

When paper or hybrid forms are part of it, when course evaluation runs centrally with course import and automatic report distribution, when learning platforms are to be connected via LTI, or when exams and quality management are to come from the same source.
