When SurveyMonkey is a fit

SurveyMonkey is a globally established survey platform with a large ecosystem. Several situations where this is more than marketing:

  • If you use SurveyMonkey Audience as part of your methodology - a built-in panel marketplace with 335M+ panelists in 130+ countries. QUESTIONSTAR has no panel marketplace of its own; we work with external panel providers (Bilendi, Respondi, Toluna and others) and can recommend a partner, with the contract then handled directly with the provider.
  • If you use SurveyMonkey Apply for application, scholarship or grant workflows - a dedicated product for grant programs that goes well beyond classic surveys. QUESTIONSTAR does not cover this workflow as a separate product.
  • If deeply maintained native integrations with Salesforce, Microsoft Teams, Slack, HubSpot, Mailchimp, Zoom, Tableau and 200+ other tools are a central part of your stack. Technically, most of these tools are also reachable via our API, webhooks, Zapier or n8n; the depth of the native integration catalog, maintained individually per vendor, is however broader at SurveyMonkey. Note: some SurveyMonkey integrations (including Salesforce, Power BI, Tableau, Marketo, Zoom) are only available in the Enterprise plan.
  • If you embed surveys directly in iOS or Android apps via a native mobile SDK. SurveyMonkey offers a dedicated SDK for this. QUESTIONSTAR covers in-app embedding via responsive web, WebView integration and QR code; we currently do not have a native mobile SDK.
  • If SurveyMonkey's international name recognition opens doors internally. QUESTIONSTAR is well established in German-speaking markets, less so internationally.

Use QUESTIONSTAR when...

QUESTIONSTAR covers the classic survey part, and does so in a framework that SurveyMonkey offers structurally differently.

  • ...when you want to know the price before you decide, without per-user billing and without a 3-user minimum for team features. All standard plans visible online: MONTHLY €59/month (from one user), STANDARD €395/year, PROFESSIONAL €995/year. In QUESTIONSTAR plans with user management (from CHAIR or PROFESSIONAL), the number of users is unlimited; billing is a flat plan fee, whose size is based on the number of simultaneously active surveys, not per user. SurveyMonkey separates two paths: individual plans for exactly 1 user (Standard Monthly $149/month, Advantage Annual $39/month billed annually = $468/year, Premier Annual $139/month billed annually = $1,668/year) and team plans from 3 users (Team Advantage $30/user/month, Team Premier $92/user/month, both billed annually). For more than one user with shared brand assets, roles and permissions, there is no way around the team plan at SurveyMonkey, and thus around the 3-user minimum.
  • ...when you do not want to lose responses or pay extra for them. QUESTIONSTAR has no response limits in paid plans and charges no per-response fee. SurveyMonkey works with fixed response quotas in every paid plan - Individual 1,000/month (Standard) or 15,000-40,000/year (Advantage/Premier), Team 50,000-100,000/year - and charges $0.15 per response above the quota.
  • ...when you do not want to negotiate per feature module. All survey features are included in all QUESTIONSTAR plans, including the free Free plan. Filter logic, branching, loops, multilingual surveys, SPSS export, API, webhooks, MCP server. Organizational features such as SSO, Whitelabel and user management vary by plan - see pricing. SurveyMonkey offers SSO, EU data center and HIPAA exclusively in the Enterprise plan; API access is limited from Advantage, full only from Enterprise.
  • ...when GDPR compliance and anonymity are a basic requirement. Granular anonymity settings per survey (one-way enforcement, private questions for HR, minimum number of respondents per group), works council / employee representation requirements (where applicable) in employee surveys, GDPR-compliant processing on behalf of the controller with a DPA available for download - all without being forced into an Enterprise plan.
  • ...when EU hosting must be included in the standard plan. Servers at IONOS in Germany (EU), ISO 27001 certified data centers - in every QUESTIONSTAR plan, including the student and Free plan. SurveyMonkey offers an EU data center only from the Enterprise plan; the default region is US.
  • ...when your report should be ready directly in an Office format. With us, reports can be exported directly as Word, PowerPoint or Excel - with charts, variable labels and annotations. SurveyMonkey also offers export to PPT, XLS, CSV and PDF - when switching, check with a test report how well the export can be further edited for your workflows.
  • ...when SPSS direct export without plan limits is the deciding factor for you. QUESTIONSTAR exports SPSS in all plans - including Free and STUDENT. SurveyMonkey SPSS export is plan-bound from Advantage (Individual/Team), per feature list. With us, variable labels, value labels and measurement level are exported as well - the typical metadata rework is eliminated. See example .sav · Screenshot of QS export dialog
  • ...when you want to use AI agents for analytics and automation. QUESTIONSTAR offers a unified MCP server (Model Context Protocol) for all workflows - building surveys, clustering responses, preparing reports, transferring data - included in all plans. SurveyMonkey provides AI features (Build with AI, Analyze with AI, Thematic Analysis) on a plan-bound basis, and does not natively document an MCP server.
  • ...when academic plans with EU hosting by default, without a response cap and without an Enterprise detour matter. QUESTIONSTAR: STUDENT €29/month, RESEARCHER €295/year, CHAIR €895/year (100 active surveys, Whitelabel, university SSO on request), CAMPUS on request (university SSO included) - all with unlimited responses in paid plans and EU hosting (IONOS, Germany) by default. SurveyMonkey offers academic plans (US, with academic ID): Standard Monthly $70/month (reg. $149, 1,000 responses/month), Advantage Annual $23/month = $276/year (reg. $39, 15,000 responses/year), Premier Annual $70/month = $840/year (reg. $139). Self-service reduced pricing is available only in the US and UK; in other countries via an application form at SurveyMonkey's discretion. SurveyMonkey default region is US; EU data center and university SSO only from Enterprise.

Migration: AI-assisted migration via MCP

For SurveyMonkey, QUESTIONSTAR currently does not offer a dedicated direct importer (unlike for Qualtrics QSF). The AI-based MCP path handles the reconstruction.

Path: AI-assisted migration via MCP

  1. Export the SurveyMonkey survey (CSV of the question structure and/or PDF export) or provide a public preview link.
  2. Hand it to an AI agent (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, etc.) with the QUESTIONSTAR MCP server.
  3. The AI reconstructs question texts, answer options, skip logic, multilingual content and randomization in QUESTIONSTAR, as far as these elements are represented in the export or preview link you provide. You review, adjust where needed, and publish.

What the AI-assisted reconstruction covers, as far as visible in the export: question texts, answer options, pages; branching and filter logic as a draft you check in review.

What still requires manual work: SurveyMonkey-specific panel marketplace links (Audience), deep native integrations (BambooHR/Workday/Salesforce), SurveyMonkey Apply workflows, elements with no direct equivalent in QUESTIONSTAR.

More on the MCP integration.

For businesses and universities

In the classic survey area, QUESTIONSTAR is enterprise- and university-ready, without forcing an Enterprise plan for core functions.

  • Hosting: IONOS in Germany (EU), ISO 27001 certified data centers, in every plan. On-premise possible in the Custom plan.
  • GDPR: DPA directly downloadable, sub-processor list public on our security page.
  • University SSO: eduGAIN and national federations (InCommon, UKfed, SWITCHaai, SURFconext, with DFN-AAI as the German example). From the CHAIR plan on request, included in the CAMPUS plan. Setup of the test login in 1-2 business days. More on university SSO.
  • Enterprise SSO/SAML: as an add-on in the Professional plan, included in the Custom plan.
  • Pricing model: per concurrent survey, unlimited responses in paid plans. From PROFESSIONAL or CHAIR, the number of users is not price-relevant.

From around 30 to 50 simultaneously active surveys, complex role models or individual compliance requirements, contact us directly; that's faster to discuss by phone or email than through a plan comparison.

What SurveyMonkey delivers more strongly in enterprise programs: SurveyMonkey Audience as a built-in panel marketplace, deep native integrations with HR suites (BambooHR, Workday), a mobile SDK for in-app surveys, SurveyMonkey Apply for grant/application workflows.

Enterprise customers such as LANXESS, Vodafone, METRO, RCI Banque, Tommy Hilfiger and Rohde & Schwarz have used QUESTIONSTAR for several years for employee and customer surveys. In academia, Technical University of Munich, LMU Munich, University of Zurich, University of Bern, FU Berlin, University of Vienna and more than 30 other universities are active.

Discuss enterprise setup

Your data stays your data

If QUESTIONSTAR ever stops convincing you, you get your data out in full: as SPSS, CSV or Excel, regardless of the import format. Any time, without cancellation, without extra charge, without asking. Fear of vendor lock-in is one of the legitimate reflexes when switching away from a SaaS contract with response quotas. We treat data export as a baseline, not a bargaining chip.

Who is QUESTIONSTAR a good fit for as a SurveyMonkey alternative?

For universities and research teams

If you need GDPR-compliant EU hosting by default (including in the student plan), unlimited responses in paid plans, university SSO (eduGAIN and national federations, from CHAIR on request, included in CAMPUS) and transparent academic pricing (STUDENT €29/month, CHAIR €895/year, CAMPUS on request), then QUESTIONSTAR. Limit: if your team makes intensive use of SurveyMonkey Audience for consumer research and doesn't want to establish an alternative to the panel marketplace, integration and panel access should be checked before switching.

For HR teams

If you need employee surveys with granular anonymity (one-way enforcement, private questions), GDPR-compliant data processing and enterprise SSO/SAML without being forced into an Enterprise plan, then QUESTIONSTAR. Limit: if your HR stack is deeply anchored in BambooHR, Workday or comparable HR suites and SurveyMonkey's native integrations deliver real automation there, integration depth and migration effort should be checked before switching.

More on HR surveys

For CX teams

If you need NPS, CSAT, CES with transparent pricing, automated email triggers, Office-ready reports and no response overflow charges during seasonal peaks, then QUESTIONSTAR. Limit: if you use SurveyMonkey GetFeedback or the mobile SDK for in-app surveys in production, QUESTIONSTAR currently covers in-app embedding only via responsive web and QR, not via a native app SDK.

For market research with large response volumes

If you need surveys with unlimited responses in all paid plans, direct SPSS export with variable and value labels, and EU hosting for data protection officers, and want to buy panels externally, then QUESTIONSTAR. Limit: if your methods stack requires SurveyMonkey Audience (335M+ panelists, 130+ countries) as an integrated panel marketplace, SurveyMonkey remains stronger there; we work with external panel providers such as Bilendi or Respondi.

More on other use cases

Common questions when switching from SurveyMonkey

What happens to my SurveyMonkey Audience target group?

SurveyMonkey Audience panels are tied to the SurveyMonkey platform and do not migrate automatically. For ongoing studies with Audience panelists, panel access stays with SurveyMonkey. For new studies, you work with external panel providers (Bilendi, Respondi, Toluna, etc.); we recommend a partner, and the contract is arranged directly with the panel provider.

How long does migration take?

The MCP-based import reconstructs a typical SurveyMonkey questionnaire, including a manual review; the effort depends on the size and logic of the survey. Surveys with complex branching, multilingual content or deep integrations to HR suites need additional review time. For larger archives we offer a guided migration service, contact us.

Are there academic discounts, and what does SurveyMonkey offer comparably?

QUESTIONSTAR academic plans can be ordered directly: STUDENT €29/month, RESEARCHER €295/year, CHAIR €895/year (100 active surveys, Whitelabel, university SSO on request), CAMPUS on request. Proof of academic status required when ordering. SurveyMonkey also offers academic plans (US, with academic ID): Standard Monthly $70/month (1,000 responses/month), Advantage Annual $23/month = $276/year (15,000 responses/year), Premier Annual $70/month = $840/year. Self-service reduced pricing is available only in the US and UK; other countries apply via a form at SurveyMonkey's discretion. Differences: QUESTIONSTAR offers unlimited responses in paid plans, EU hosting by default and university SSO (eduGAIN and national federations) from CHAIR.

Where is the data stored?

Hosted in Germany (EU) by IONOS, in ISO 27001 certified data centers. DPA directly downloadable. Sub-processor list publicly viewable on our security page. No data transfer to third countries without a legal basis. On-premise deployment possible in the Custom plan. SurveyMonkey offers EU data center hosting only in the Enterprise plan.

What happens if I exceed my response quota?

With QUESTIONSTAR in paid plans: nothing. No response limits, no per-response extra charges. SurveyMonkey charges $0.15 per additional response over the annual quota (50,000 for Team Advantage, 100,000 for Team Premier). You should factor this in when switching, especially with seasonally fluctuating response volumes.

Can I export my SurveyMonkey report directly as a PowerPoint for management?

Yes. The Office export in QUESTIONSTAR produces a finished PowerPoint file with charts, tables and labels, not just a CSV from which someone rebuilds the report. Likewise for Word (narrative) and Excel (raw data with pivot preparation). SurveyMonkey also offers PPT export; how well the format can be edited further is best checked with a test report from both tools before you finally switch.

What does QUESTIONSTAR cost for a 3-user team compared to SurveyMonkey Team?

With QUESTIONSTAR you pay the flat plan price regardless of how many users you have. For three users with shared surveys and roles, the PROFESSIONAL plan is the right fit (€995/year, 10 concurrently active surveys, unlimited users). With SurveyMonkey Team Advantage for three users: 3 × $30 × 12 = $1,080/year (billed annually); Team Premier: 3 × $92 × 12 = $3,312/year, in both cases plus $0.15 per response above the annual quota. QUESTIONSTAR charges no per-response fee and does not cap the number of users from PROFESSIONAL onward.

Can I import existing SurveyMonkey responses into QUESTIONSTAR?

Yes, via CSV or XLS export from SurveyMonkey. You upload the response data to QUESTIONSTAR together with the survey structure (reconstructed via MCP); response mappings are preserved. Variable and value labels are added afterward in QUESTIONSTAR, or set during the MCP rebuild of the survey structure (CSV/XLS do not carry these SPSS-typical metadata). For ongoing studies we recommend a cutoff-based switch with 2-4 weeks of parallel operation. Talk to us if you have larger data holdings.
