When LimeSurvey is the right fit
LimeSurvey has been on the market for over 15 years, is methodologically serious, open-source rooted, and backed by an active community. Four situations where LimeSurvey remains the better choice:
- When your IT department deliberately wants server ownership. Full control over code, database, patch cycle, and data on your own infrastructure is the open-source promise. QUESTIONSTAR is deliberately not a self-hosted standard offering (on-premise is possible in the CUSTOM plan).
- When free is a hard requirement and you have the operational resources. LimeSurvey Community Edition is free to use under the GPL. If servers, admin hours, backup, and monitoring are already budgeted, this is economically attractive. Making the total-cost calculation honest, including IT person-days, remains a must.
- When an open-source audit is a compliance prerequisite. Certain public tenders, university policies, or compliance frameworks require open-source software with auditable code. QUESTIONSTAR is proprietary SaaS; we provide audit reports, ISO 27001 data centers, and a DPA, but no source code.
- When your LimeSurvey installation is running in production and is deeply embedded methodologically (custom question-type extensions via plugins, theme customizations, local user management, ExpressionScript specifics). A switch then pays off mainly for new projects or when the infrastructure cycle is due anyway.
Use QUESTIONSTAR when...
QUESTIONSTAR covers survey needs from research groups to enterprise, in a framework that deliberately differs from the LimeSurvey open-source model and from Cloud tier gating.
- ...when you want unlimited responses at the published price, with no per-response fee. Example: QUESTIONSTAR PROFESSIONAL €995/year (10 simultaneously active surveys, unlimited responses, unlimited users) vs LimeSurvey Cloud Business $67/month, $797 billed annually with 50,000 responses/year. For universities: QUESTIONSTAR CHAIR €895/year (100 simultaneously active surveys, unlimited responses). All QS plans on the pricing page. Non-EUR prices are for orientation only; checkout is always in EUR. Prices as shown on LimeSurvey's pricing page on October 21, 2026; may vary by country.
- ...when you want to connect AI agents (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, and others) to your survey and analysis workflows. QUESTIONSTAR provides a unified MCP server (Model Context Protocol) across all plans. LimeSurvey has the RemoteControl 2 API (XML-RPC/JSON-RPC) and a REST API; a natively documented MCP server is not listed on the LimeSurvey product pages.
- ...when you want your analytical report ready directly as an editable Office file. QUESTIONSTAR exports finished analysis reports as native Word/PowerPoint/Excel objects with editable charts, tables, and text blocks, not as embedded images. LimeSurvey has online reports (HTML/PDF) and a Word export of the raw responses; a finished analytical report with native editable charts as a Word/PowerPoint template is not documented on the product pages.
- ...when GDPR compliance and granular anonymity are a basic requirement. Granular anonymity settings per survey (one-way enforcement, private questions, minimum number of respondents), a GDPR-compliant processing arrangement with a DPA available for download, and a public list of subprocessors. LimeSurvey advertises "GDPR-first by default" with a downloadable DPA. (Certification scope should be checked separately for both vendors, see comparison table below; LimeSurvey's statements on the higher education page and in the website footer differ.)
- ...when direct SPSS export across all plans should be the standard route. QUESTIONSTAR exports SPSS (.sav) natively in all plans, including Free and STUDENT, with variable names, variable labels, value labels, and measurement level directly from the UI. LimeSurvey Cloud offers SPSS/R/Stata export in all tiers; the functional coverage is comparable. For both platforms, the output format and metadata should be checked against a test export.
- ...when enterprise SSO/SAML should be activatable in a planned way, without booking the enterprise tier. QUESTIONSTAR: SSO/SAML in the PROFESSIONAL plan as an add-on (ordered from within the plan), included in the CUSTOM plan. University SSO (eduGAIN, DFN-AAI) from CHAIR up on request, included in CAMPUS, see university SSO. LimeSurvey Cloud offers SSO/LDAP/SAML only in the Corporate tier (quote-based) per its pricing page.
- ...when the questionnaire builder, logic editor, and report builder should run in the same interface. No separate admin, ExpressionScript, or theme-editor contexts; new admins work in the browser editor directly with questionnaire, logic, and report, without instance setup or an IT ticket.

Switching: AI-assisted import via MCP
LimeSurvey exports survey structures as LSS (XML of the survey structure without responses) and LSA (a survey archive with structure plus response data), both intended for exchange between LimeSurvey instances. QUESTIONSTAR currently has no dedicated LSS/LSA importer; the AI-based MCP path is the available reconstruction route.
Path: AI-assisted import via MCP
- Export the LimeSurvey survey as LSS (structure without responses) or LSA (with responses). Alternatively, use the print view as a PDF or a public preview link.
- Hand the file or link to an AI agent (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and others) with the QUESTIONSTAR MCP server.
- The AI reconstructs question texts, answer options, branching logic, multilingual structure and randomization in QUESTIONSTAR. You review, adjust if needed, and publish.
What the MCP server imports automatically: question texts, answer options, simple filter and branching logic (answer-based conditions), page structure (groups), multilingual structure.
The limit of AI reconstruction: LimeSurvey relevanceEqn with cross-question references, nested ExpressionScript expressions or tailor() functions remain subject to review; you model these deliberately in the QUESTIONSTAR setup. Custom question-type extensions via plugins and local theme adjustments have no 1:1 equivalent in the QUESTIONSTAR standard.
The time required depends on the complexity of the survey: simple questionnaires go quickly, extensive ExpressionScript or plugin logic takes correspondingly more review time. For larger study archives we offer a guided migration service.
For surveys already in the field we recommend a cutover on a fixed date with 2-4 weeks of parallel operation. Export response data from LimeSurvey as CSV/SPSS, reconstruct the survey structure via MCP, then import the response data. Variable and value labels are set from the question texts; take variable names from the CSV column headers, and check measurement-level assignments and missing-value coding in the review step.
More on the MCP integration.
For businesses and universities
QUESTIONSTAR works equally well for department-level studies, HR census, CX trackers and market research panels, with no IT operations on your side and no enterprise tier for the basics.
- Hosting: IONOS SE in Germany, ISO 27001 certified data centers, in every plan. On-premise possible in the CUSTOM plan.
- GDPR: DPA directly downloadable, sub-processor list public.
- Enterprise SSO/SAML: an add-on in the PROFESSIONAL plan, included in the CUSTOM plan.
- University SSO: eduGAIN and DFN-AAI from CHAIR on request, included in CAMPUS. More on university SSO.
- Pricing model: flat plan fee per concurrently active survey, unlimited responses in paid plans, number of users not price-relevant from PROFESSIONAL onward.
From roughly 30 to 50 concurrently active surveys, complex role models or individual compliance requirements, contact us directly; it is sorted out faster by phone or email than through a pricing page.
What LimeSurvey does better in these situations: the Community Edition under GPL as auditable, self-hosted open-source software for IT departments wanting server ownership, the methodological maturity of its methods library built over 15+ years, an active open-source community with a plugin ecosystem, and discounts for teachers (30%), students (50%) and charitable organisations (30%, classroom use) on request.
Universities such as Technical University of Munich, LMU Munich, University of Zurich, University of Bern, FU Berlin, University of Vienna and more than 30 others use QUESTIONSTAR; in the enterprise space, LANXESS, Vodafone, METRO, RCI Banque, Tommy Hilfiger and Rohde & Schwarz have been active for several years.
Your data stays your data
If QUESTIONSTAR ever stops convincing you, you get your data out in full: as SPSS, CSV or Excel, regardless of the import format. Any time, without cancelling, without an extra fee, without a follow-up question. Open-source users know the worry about vendor lock-in; we treat data export as a baseline, not a bargaining chip.
Who is QUESTIONSTAR a good LimeSurvey alternative for?

For universities and research teams
If you need the feature set of an academic survey platform (multilingual support, complex branching, loops, direct SPSS export with full labels, a minimum respondent count for anonymity) without running your own LimeSurvey instance, including for third-party-funded projects, choose QUESTIONSTAR. CHAIR €895/year: 100 concurrently active surveys, unlimited responses per survey, Whitelabel, university SSO from CHAIR on request; CAMPUS with eduGAIN/DFN-AAI included. The limit: if your data center runs LimeSurvey as a central university instance, governance stays simpler there.

For HR teams without IT self-host capacity
If you need employee surveys with granular anonymity (one-way enforcement, private questions, a minimum respondent count), a GDPR-compliant DPA and enterprise SSO/SAML, choose QUESTIONSTAR. SSO/SAML as an add-on in PROFESSIONAL, included in CUSTOM. When switching from LimeSurvey Community, you drop the burden of running your own instance; compared with LimeSurvey Cloud, the differences are MCP, natively editable Office reports and unlimited responses in paid plans. The limit: if your IT already runs a central LimeSurvey instance for the whole organization, that stays the integrated option.

For CX teams
If you want to get NPS, CSAT, CES into production quickly, with automated email triggers, natively editable Office reports and no setup of a self-hosted instance, choose QUESTIONSTAR. The limit: if you need a dedicated CX suite with journey orchestration, neither LimeSurvey nor QUESTIONSTAR is a CX suite; for that scope, look at specialized XM suites.

For market research with managed infrastructure
If you need complex study designs (loops, randomization), unlimited responses in paid plans (even for MR waves with 5,000-50,000 participants) and direct SPSS export with full labels, choose QUESTIONSTAR. When switching from LimeSurvey Community, you drop the server responsibility; compared with LimeSurvey Cloud, the differences are response quotas, MCP and analytical Office reports. The limit: if your methodology relies on LimeSurvey ExpressionScript specifics or custom question-type extensions, check the 1:1 mapping before switching.
Common questions when switching from LimeSurvey
Can I migrate my LimeSurvey surveys to QUESTIONSTAR?
Yes, via the AI-based MCP path. LimeSurvey exports the survey structure as LSS (XML of the structure without responses) and LSA (a survey archive with structure plus response data). You hand these files to an AI agent with the QUESTIONSTAR MCP server, which reconstructs question texts, answer options, branching logic and multilingual support. Export the response data separately as CSV/SPSS and import it. Time required depends on complexity: simple questionnaires go quickly, extensive ExpressionScript or plugin logic takes correspondingly more review time. For larger study archives we offer a guided migration service.
How do the prices compare in concrete terms?
LimeSurvey Community Edition is free as GPL software, but it incurs operating costs (server, admin hours for patches and upgrades, backup routines, uptime monitoring, security advisories). LimeSurvey Cloud (US view per limesurvey.org/pricing): Basic $39/month with 1,000 responses/month, Expert $36/month ($432 billed annually) with 10,000/year, Business $67/month ($797 billed annually) with 50,000/year; Corporate quote-based. Non-EUR prices are for orientation only; checkout is always in EUR. QUESTIONSTAR: MONTHLY €59/month, STANDARD €395/year, PROFESSIONAL €995/year (10 concurrently active surveys, unlimited responses, unlimited users). Academic: STUDENT €29/month, RESEARCHER €295/year, CHAIR €895/year (100 concurrent). All QS plans on the pricing page.
Where is the data stored?
QUESTIONSTAR: hosted in Germany (EU) by IONOS, ISO 27001 certified data centers, in every plan. LimeSurvey Cloud: several hosting regions including Germany, Finland (recommended for EU customers), the UK, USA, Canada and Australia; the maker, LimeSurvey GmbH, is based in Hamburg. Compared with LimeSurvey Cloud, the differences are MCP connectivity, natively editable Office reports and response quotas; compared with LimeSurvey Community, you additionally drop running your own instance.
Does QUESTIONSTAR support university SSO (eduGAIN, DFN-AAI)?
Yes, from CHAIR on request, included in CAMPUS. Setting up the test login usually takes 1-2 business days. LimeSurvey Cloud offers SSO/LDAP/SAML only in the Corporate tier (quote-based) per its pricing page; eduGAIN/DFN-AAI federation is in principle configurable for the Community Edition via a SAML plugin and depends on the data center running the instance.
"But LimeSurvey Community is free": what speaks against the self-host path?
Arithmetically nothing, as software. The total-cost view additionally covers server operation, admin hours for patches and upgrades, backup routines, uptime monitoring, security advisories and first-level support for production incidents. For organizations with existing IT capacity and a server-ownership stance, this is often the cheapest solution. For everyone else, managed SaaS is the more predictable path.
Can I host QUESTIONSTAR myself?
On-premise is possible on the CUSTOM plan, but it is not the standard path. If self-hosting is a hard requirement (IT governance, mandatory open-source audits), the LimeSurvey Community Edition is the more honest choice. QUESTIONSTAR is deliberately a managed SaaS, hosted in Germany.
What happens to my LimeSurvey plugins and theme customizations?
QUESTIONSTAR covers the standard survey features out of the box (question types, logic, branching, multilingual surveys). LimeSurvey-specific plugin features and local theme customizations have no 1:1 equivalent; we handle special cases within the CUSTOM scope.
Is there an ExpressionScript equivalent?
QUESTIONSTAR uses its own logic engine with UI-based conditions and calculation questions. There is no 1:1 ExpressionScript equivalent; simple answer-based branching maps directly to the UI, while complex Expression logic may need to be rebuilt as a calculation question.
Is phone support included in every plan?
QUESTIONSTAR: phone and email support on all plans, including Free, in English and German during CET business hours. LimeSurvey Community: community forum and GitHub issues (free, community-based). LimeSurvey Cloud: email support from Basic, priority email from Business, VIP (CSM, dedicated queue) from Corporate.
How do I connect AI agents (Claude, ChatGPT)?
QUESTIONSTAR offers a native MCP server on all plans. LimeSurvey has the RemoteControl 2 API (XML-RPC/JSON-RPC) and a REST API; a natively documented MCP server is not listed on the LimeSurvey product pages. Building one on top of the APIs is technically possible, but remains non-trivial work on your side.
What happens to my data if I leave QUESTIONSTAR?
Full export at any time as SPSS, CSV or Excel, regardless of the import format, without cancellation, without extra fees, without asking. Open-source users know the fear of vendor lock-in; we treat data export as a baseline, not a bargaining chip.
