When Unipark is the right choice

Unipark has been in use at German-speaking universities for over 20 years and deserves to be taken seriously methodologically. Several situations where Unipark remains the better choice:

  • If your university already works with Unipark: a framework agreement, ongoing projects and trained staff. Switching mid-project costs more than it gains; panel projects running through a paired EFS environment (a separate Tivian product line) also need their continuation checked. QUESTIONSTAR has no panel marketplace of its own; we work with external panel providers (Bilendi, Respondi, Toluna and others) and via your own contact lists.
  • If EFS method libraries, questionnaire templates, or teaching materials built up over years are central to your curriculum. This investment does not migrate automatically; an AI-assisted reconstruction via MCP covers a lot, but not everything.
  • If your university framework agreement for Unipark still runs for several years and dual licensing is out of the question. In that case, a look at QUESTIONSTAR is worthwhile mainly for new projects not tied to the license, and as preparation for the next procurement cycle.
  • If a tool switch doesn't fit into the current semester. Running both in parallel for 2-4 weeks reduces the loss of productivity; we support the transition.

Use QUESTIONSTAR when...

QUESTIONSTAR covers academic and organizational survey needs, and does so within a framework that deliberately differs from Unipark.

  • ...when you think about capacity in terms of parallel surveys rather than an interview cap per project. QUESTIONSTAR charges a flat rate per plan; the plan size is measured by the number of simultaneously active surveys (CHAIR 100 · CAMPUS unlimited), responses per survey are unlimited in paid plans, and the number of users is unlimited from CHAIR and PROFESSIONAL upward. Unipark also offers public plans (Department €500 for 12 months for 25 projects, Institute €1,400 for 100 projects, both excl. VAT), with a fixed cap of 10,000 interviews per project. Concrete comparison rows are in the feature table below.
  • ...when you don't want to lose responses or buy more. QUESTIONSTAR has no response limits in paid plans and no interview caps per project. Unipark caps per project: Student 2,000 interviews/project, Department/Institute/Campus 10,000 interviews/project. For longitudinal studies or large panels, you have to license more.
  • ...when you want to connect AI agents (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and others) to your survey workflows. QUESTIONSTAR offers a unified MCP server (Model Context Protocol) in all plans: build surveys, cluster open-ended answers, prepare reports, transfer data. Unipark currently documents no native MCP server; Unipark users typically build comparable AI workflows via their own API scripts or manual export/import routines.
  • ...when your report should be ready directly in Office format. QUESTIONSTAR exports native Office objects (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, directly editable, not as embedded images) plus PDF. Unipark provides direct SPSS export and 10 further data formats (XLS, CSV and others); editable Office report objects are not a documented standard feature.
  • ...when direct SPSS export in all plans is the deciding factor. QUESTIONSTAR exports SPSS in all plans, including Free and STUDENT, with full variable and value labels and measurement level. Unipark also offers SPSS-labeled export strongly (the EFS heritage), but in the Student plan only with a project license. View sample .sav · Screenshot of QS export dialog
  • ...when GDPR compliance and anonymity are a basic requirement. Granular anonymity settings per survey (one-way enforcement, private questions, minimum number of participants), works council / employee representation requirements (where applicable) in employee surveys, GDPR-compliant processing on behalf of the controller with a DPA available for download, all without a separate enterprise license.
  • ...when university SSO should be explicitly documented and published on the product side. QUESTIONSTAR names eduGAIN and the national federations (InCommon, UKfed, SURFconext, SWITCHaai, with DFN-AAI as the German example) explicitly as supported: from the CHAIR plan on request, included in the CAMPUS plan, with setup in 1-2 business days. Unipark offers SSO in the campus contract (generic, typically Shibboleth), but without explicit eduGAIN product documentation.
  • ...when a short onboarding matters for the switching decision. QUESTIONSTAR's UI was rebuilt over the last five years. New student assistants and research staff are usually productive on day one.

Switching: AI-assisted migration via MCP

QUESTIONSTAR currently does not offer a dedicated direct importer for Unipark (Unipark/EFS does not export an open questionnaire exchange standard). The AI-based MCP path handles the reconstruction.

Path: AI-assisted migration via MCP

  1. Export the Unipark survey (PDF print view or Word export of the question structure) or provide a public preview link.
  2. Hand it to an AI agent (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and others) with the QUESTIONSTAR MCP server.
  3. The AI reconstructs question texts, answer options, branching logic, multilingual setup and randomization in QUESTIONSTAR, as far as those elements are represented in the export or preview link you provide. You review, adjust where needed, and publish.

What the AI-assisted reconstruction covers, as far as visible in the export: question texts, answer options, pages; branching and filter logic as a draft you check in review.

What still requires manual work: EFS panel/community links and the EFS method library built up over the years, elements with no direct equivalent in QUESTIONSTAR.

For ongoing studies we recommend a cut-off-based switch with 2-4 weeks of parallel operation. Export response data from Unipark as CSV/XLS, reconstruct the survey structure in QUESTIONSTAR via MCP, import the response data. Variable and value labels are set from the question texts; check variable names (taken from CSV/XLS column headers where applicable), measurement-level assignments and missing-value codings in the review step.

For businesses and universities

In the academic and organizational survey area, QUESTIONSTAR is enterprise- and university-ready, without forcing you into an enterprise plan for core functions.

  • Hosting: IONOS SE in Germany, ISO 27001 certified data centers, in every plan. On-premise possible in the Custom plan.
  • GDPR: DPA available to download directly, sub-processor list public on our security page.
  • University SSO: eduGAIN and the national federations (InCommon, UKfed, SURFconext, SWITCHaai, DFN-AAI as the German example). On request from CHAIR, included in CAMPUS. Setup of the test login in 1-2 business days. Worldwide via eduGAIN interfederation. More on university SSO.
  • Enterprise SSO/SAML: add-on in the Professional plan, included in the Custom plan.
  • Pricing model: flat plan fee per concurrently active survey, unlimited responses, number of users not price-relevant from CHAIR/PROFESSIONAL onward.

From roughly 30 to 50 concurrently active surveys, complex role models or individual compliance requirements, talk to us directly: it is sorted out faster by phone or email than through a pricing page.

What Unipark does more strongly: more than 20 years of academic product history with a corresponding method library, and established workflows at universities with trained staff.

Enterprise customers such as LANXESS, Vodafone, METRO, RCI Banque, Tommy Hilfiger and Rohde & Schwarz have used QUESTIONSTAR for several years for employee and customer surveys. In the academic field, Technical University of Munich, LMU Munich, University of Zurich, University of Bern, FU Berlin, University of Vienna and more than 30 other universities are active.

Discuss an enterprise setup

Your data stays your data

If QUESTIONSTAR ever stops convincing you, you get your data out in full: as SPSS, CSV or Excel, regardless of the import format. Any time, without cancellation, without an extra fee, without asking. The worry about vendor lock-in is legitimate, especially when switching from a project-based license. We treat data export as a baseline, not a bargaining chip.

Who is QUESTIONSTAR a good Unipark alternative for?

For universities and research teams

If you need extensive academic survey features (multilingual support, complex branching, longitudinal codes, SPSS direct export with full labels, multi-project management) on a modern interface, QUESTIONSTAR. CHAIR €895/year: 100 active surveys, unlimited responses per survey, Whitelabel included, university SSO on request; CAMPUS with eduGAIN/DFN-AAI included. Limit: if your university already works with Unipark (framework agreement, ongoing projects) or panel projects run through a paired EFS environment (a separate Tivian product), check license and panel continuation before switching.

For HR teams

If you need employee surveys with granular anonymity (one-way enforcement, private questions, minimum number of respondents), GDPR-compliant data processing and enterprise SSO/SAML without a separate enterprise SKU, QUESTIONSTAR. Limit: if your HR suite includes a dedicated employee survey module with established benchmark databases, check the migration effort and benchmark continuation before switching.

For CX teams

If you need NPS, CSAT, CES with transparent pricing, automated email triggers, Office-ready reports and no interview caps per project during seasonal peaks, QUESTIONSTAR. Limit: if you are looking for a dedicated CX suite with journey orchestration and case routing, neither Unipark nor QUESTIONSTAR is a CX suite, look at Qualtrics XM or Medallia separately for that.

For market research with large response volumes

If you need complex study designs (loops, multilingual support, randomization), unlimited responses in paid plans, SPSS direct export with variable and value labels, plus GDPR-compliant EU hosting for your data protection officers, and you want to buy panels externally, QUESTIONSTAR. Limit: if your panel projects run through a paired EFS environment (a separate Tivian product line), check panel continuation before switching; we work with external panel providers such as Bilendi or Respondi.

Common questions when switching from Unipark

Can I migrate my Unipark surveys to QUESTIONSTAR?

There is no dedicated Unipark importer (Unipark/EFS does not export an open questionnaire exchange standard). The AI-based MCP path handles the reconstruction: hand the question structure as a PDF/Word export or a public preview link to an AI agent with the QUESTIONSTAR MCP server, review in QUESTIONSTAR, publish. The effort depends on the size and logic of the survey.

How do the academic prices compare in concrete terms?

QUESTIONSTAR CHAIR €895/year: 100 concurrently active surveys, unlimited responses per survey, Whitelabel, unlimited users, university SSO on request. Unipark Department €500 for 12 months excl. VAT: 25 parallel projects, 10,000 interviews per project, unlimited users. CHAIR offers higher included capacities, four times as many parallel surveys and no interview cap per survey. Unipark Institute €1,400 excl. VAT extends to 100 projects at 10,000 interviews each. Prices as shown on Unipark's pricing page on October 21, 2026; may vary by country.

Where is the data stored?

QUESTIONSTAR is hosted in Germany (EU) by IONOS, in ISO 27001 certified data centers, in every plan. Unipark hosts in Germany. Hosting in Germany is standard with both; the difference lies in plan capacities (unlimited responses per survey from the paid plan onward), native MCP connection and editable Office reports, not in the hosting location.

Does QUESTIONSTAR support university SSO (eduGAIN, DFN-AAI)?

Yes, on request from CHAIR, included in CAMPUS. Setup of the test login in 1-2 business days. Worldwide via eduGAIN interfederation. Unipark also offers SSO, but only in the campus contract and without explicit eduGAIN product documentation (usually Shibboleth-based by individual agreement).

What happens to my SPSS variable and value labels during the migration?

The MCP path reconstructs variable and value labels from the question texts and answer options of the original, which covers the content labeling in the new survey. Original variable names can carry over as column headers in CSV/XLS, but measurement-level assignments (nominal/ordinal/metric) and missing-value codings cannot, these SPSS-specific metadata have to be checked and mapped by you in the review step in QUESTIONSTAR. After the mapping, the SPSS export in QUESTIONSTAR again delivers full labels + measurement level. For larger studies with many measurement-level specifics, we offer a guided migration service.

Is there a framework contract for universities?

Yes, the CAMPUS plan is designed exactly for this: university-wide, with university SSO (eduGAIN/DFN-AAI) included, central admin management, consolidated invoicing and a framework contract for a multi-year term. We clarify terms and configuration individually with your procurement or IT, talk to us.

Which export formats, does SPSS come out with full labels?

SPSS direct export in all QUESTIONSTAR plans (including Free and STUDENT) with variable and value labels plus measurement level. In addition, native Word/PowerPoint/Excel reports (editable, not embedded as an image) + PDF. Unipark also delivers labeled SPSS export strongly (EFS heritage) plus 10 further data formats (XLS, CSV and others); native editable Office reports are not listed as a standard feature on the shop page.

What are Unipark's advantages over QUESTIONSTAR?

Separate, tightly integrated panel software product for running panels with respondent incentives, a methodological template library built over more than 20 years of academic use, and interface familiarity for research teams with many years of experience.

What happens to ongoing surveys when you switch?

For ongoing studies, we recommend a cut-off-based switch with a parallel run of 2-4 weeks. Export the response data from Unipark as CSV or XLS, rebuild the survey structure in QUESTIONSTAR via MCP, and import the response data; response mappings are preserved. Variable and value labels are set during the MCP rebuild from the question texts. Variable names can be taken from CSV/XLS column headers; you check level-of-measurement assignments and missing value coding in the review step (see the separate FAQ on SPSS metadata). For larger study archives, we offer a guided migration service: get in touch.
