When QuestionPro is a good fit

QuestionPro has been on the market since 2005 (founded in Seattle, HQ Austin) and offers a very wide range of features. In several situations, QuestionPro may be the better choice:

  • If you need advanced market research methods. In the Research Suite, QuestionPro offers Conjoint, MaxDiff, TURF and Van Westendorp pricing analysis. QUESTIONSTAR does not offer these methods as dedicated features.
  • If you buy respondents directly from the provider. QuestionPro offers access to its own panel with, according to the provider, over 22 million respondents.
  • If surveys are to become part of a larger platform. QuestionPro offers solutions for customer feedback, employee feedback and online communities from a single source.
  • If you start for free with multiple surveys. The Essentials plan allows 200 responses per survey, according to the features page for up to 10 surveys. The QUESTIONSTAR Free plan is smaller, with one active survey and 50 responses, but it includes all features.
  • If you are switching from Qualtrics or SurveyMonkey. QuestionPro offers dedicated importers for these platforms in the Research Suite.

Use QUESTIONSTAR if...

Functionally, the two platforms are close to each other, and both also offer an MCP server. The difference lies in the licensing model and in what is included in which plan.

  • ...if several people work on your team. QUESTIONSTAR PROFESSIONAL: €995/year with 10 simultaneously active surveys and unlimited users. QuestionPro charges per user, billed annually. Advanced costs $99 per user per month and applies to one user. Additional users are only available, according to the help, from the Team Edition: according to the pricing page $83 per user per month, minimum 5 users.
  • ...if significance tests should not depend on the plan. QUESTIONSTAR: filters, crosstabs, group comparisons, t-tests and other significance tests, included in every plan including Free. With QuestionPro, crosstabs are available from Advanced; chi-square, column proportions test and Fisher test are, according to the help, reserved for the Research Suite.
  • ...if your analysis should go straight into SPSS and PowerPoint. QUESTIONSTAR: SPSS export with variable labels, value labels and measurement level, plus analysis reports as editable Word, PowerPoint and Excel files, in every plan. With QuestionPro, SPSS and PowerPoint export are included from Advanced, not in the free Essentials plan.
  • ...if your survey should be translated automatically. QUESTIONSTAR: automatic translation into 106 languages, unlimited language versions, even in the Free plan. With QuestionPro, automatic translation is, according to the help, available from the Team Edition, for survey texts under 5,000 characters.
  • ...if you don't want to plan around response quotas. QUESTIONSTAR: unlimited responses in all paid plans. QuestionPro Advanced includes 25,000 responses per year, the Team Edition 100,000. The number of simultaneously active surveys is limited per plan with QUESTIONSTAR.
  • ...if respondents should see only your brand. QUESTIONSTAR: Whitelabel from MONTHLY, academic from CHAIR. With QuestionPro, surveys show, according to the help, a "Powered by QuestionPro" footer from Advanced, and email invitations a notice in all licenses. Whether the notice can be removed is not publicly documented.

Feature comparison

Migration: AI import via MCP

QuestionPro exports questionnaires as PDF or DOC; responses can be downloaded as SPSS, CSV or Excel. QUESTIONSTAR currently offers no dedicated QuestionPro importer; the AI-based MCP path handles the reconstruction.

Path: AI import via MCP

  1. Export the questionnaire as DOC or PDF, or provide the survey link.
  2. Hand the file or link to an AI agent (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and others) with a QUESTIONSTAR MCP server.
  3. The AI reconstructs question texts, answer options and pages in QUESTIONSTAR; you add logic, quotas and language versions during review.

Limit of reconstruction: What gets carried over is what is visible in the source material. Extraction (carry-forward) you recreate via display logic; Conjoint, MaxDiff and TURF tasks as well as panel connections are not transferred.

The time required depends on complexity. For larger inventories we offer a guided migration service.

For ongoing data collection a clear cut-off date is advisable: close running surveys in QuestionPro, start new waves in QUESTIONSTAR. Export previous responses as Excel or CSV and bring them over via the MCP path if needed.

More on the MCP integration.

For businesses and universities

QUESTIONSTAR covers surveys from a single research group to a large corporation, with all survey features already in the Free plan.

  • Hosting: IONOS SE in Germany, ISO 27001 certified data centers, in every plan. On-premise possible in the CUSTOM plan.
  • GDPR: DPA directly downloadable, sub-processor list public.
  • SSO: for user accounts in PROFESSIONAL as an add-on, included in CUSTOM; universities via eduGAIN and national federations (InCommon, UKfed, SWITCHaai; DFN-AAI as the German example) from CHAIR on request.
  • Academic plans: STUDENT €29/month, RESEARCHER €295/year, CHAIR €895/year, CAMPUS on request.
  • Support: by email and phone for all customers, regardless of plan.

From around 30 to 50 simultaneously active surveys or individual compliance requirements onward, contact us directly. That gets sorted out faster by phone or email than through a pricing page.

What QuestionPro does more strongly in these situations: advanced methods in the Research Suite, an own panel, solutions for customer, employee and community feedback, a Free plan with more volume, 24/7 chat support, and importers for Qualtrics and SurveyMonkey.

Your data stays your data

Who is QUESTIONSTAR a good fit for as a QuestionPro alternative?

For teams with multiple users

When several colleagues create and analyze surveys: QUESTIONSTAR PROFESSIONAL €995/year with 10 simultaneously active surveys, unlimited users and unlimited responses. Limit: when you want to bundle customer, employee and community feedback on one platform, QuestionPro covers more.

For international surveys

When surveys run in many languages and translations should not be done by hand: QUESTIONSTAR translates automatically into 106 languages, in every plan. Limit: when you have translations done professionally anyway, automatic translation adds little.

For universities and research teams

For university departments and research teams, QUESTIONSTAR offers its own academic plans: STUDENT €29/month and CHAIR €895/year with public prices, CAMPUS on request, with significance tests and SPSS export in every plan and university SSO from CHAIR on request. Limit: when you need to recruit respondents through a panel, QuestionPro offers an own panel.

Common questions when switching from QuestionPro

What is the difference in pricing models?

QuestionPro charges per user and year, with a response quota per plan. QUESTIONSTAR charges by simultaneously active surveys; all survey and analysis features are included in every plan, from PROFESSIONAL onward with no cap on the number of users. Example: a team of five needs at least the Team Edition at QuestionPro, which per the pricing page works out to 5 x $83 x 12 = $4,980 per year, billed annually. At QUESTIONSTAR everyone works in PROFESSIONAL (€995/year, up to 10 simultaneously active surveys).

Where is the data stored?

Both offer EU hosting; QuestionPro also offers US and other regions. QUESTIONSTAR hosts with IONOS in Germany (EU), in ISO 27001 certified data centers, in every plan. QuestionPro lets you create an account on a chosen data center (US, Canada, EU in the Netherlands, MENA, Australia or India); according to the vendor existing surveys and data are not transferred between data centers. Both offer a DPA.

Can I bring over my QuestionPro surveys?

Yes, via the AI-based MCP path from the DOC or PDF export or the survey link. You bring over previous responses via the MCP path as well.

Is phone support included in every plan?

Yes, phone and email support are included on all plans, including Free.

Does QUESTIONSTAR offer Conjoint, MaxDiff or TURF?

Not as dedicated features. If these methods are central to your studies, the QuestionPro Research Suite is stronger there. For crosstabs, group comparisons, significance tests and SPSS export, you won't need a higher plan with QUESTIONSTAR.

Are wave comparisons still possible?

Yes. In QuestionPro, you export previous results as Excel or CSV and bring them into QUESTIONSTAR via the MCP path. You create comparisons between waves using filters or with your AI assistant via MCP. When doing so, check whether questions and answer codings are comparable.

Does QuestionPro also have an MCP server?

Yes. QuestionPro offers official MCP servers for ChatGPT, Claude and Copilot. With QUESTIONSTAR, the MCP server is included in all plans, including the Free plan.

When does QuestionPro remain the better choice?

When Conjoint, MaxDiff or TURF are part of your standard work, when you source respondents through the provider's own panel, when surveys become part of a larger feedback platform, or when you want to start free with several surveys at once.
